Taylor Swift Throws Major Shade at Kanye West with New Song Title!

Once again, Taylor Swift has stirred up a tempest of excitement and intrigue among her fan base. The pop music powerhouse has released another live song—this time, a rapturous combination of “Thank You Amy,” and “Speak Now.” This medley, performed at her London show in June, happened to drop just before the MTV Video Music Awards—the same ceremony that a decade ago enshrined in the public’s memory her infamous and undeserved tumble into the floor-gawking position. As with all things Swift, it is closely watched and scrutinized (when not obsessively memorized) by her fan base and beyond. She is, after all, a cultural phenomenon like few others. As a revenge narrative, Kanye and Kim slash at Swift, while she Confidently lives and oh-so-blissfully creates her receptive, chart-zinging alternate narrative through song.

Almost immediately, fans began to dissect the new title. Many believe it was a jab at the rapper after years of public tension. They pointed to the original version of the title, “Eminem Is a Liar,” and noted that it was not only a bold statement but also a clever play on words. They seemed to be in awe of Taylor’s narrative reclamation. And that makes sense. For years, Eminem has come for Taylor in his music. Some of this has been a part of their public rivalry, but some of it seems to be the kind of diss that Eminem has in his arsenal for any given occasion. In either case, Taylor’s new song appears to do two things. One, it appears to throw shade. Two, it appears to state a fact.

“Thank You Amy” is a song in which Swift addresses her unfair public fights and the very public humiliation she’s endured. And while many of us might assume Swift’s more recent experiences with a certain blonded, braided-haired narrative-stealing queen might have been the impetus for writing about emotional rollercoasters and hitting the unfollow button on a past friendship, she’s actually heaping her thanks upon an entirely different auburn-haired scenario—a big “thank you” for her 2008 VMA moment.
